Why positive thinking and affirmations may not work? Then, what to do?

Positive Thinking is only the first automatic step to success.

Living in the world where there are numerous pressures to excel, positive thinking and affirmations are a favored technique. Both have a way of doing the trick during childhood. However, for most of us they work less and less as we get older. Why so?

When positive affirmations don’t work, we usually take solace in the belief that, God willing, the results will be there when the time is right regardless of actions. Such thinking has a potential of inducing false expectations. In defense of the believers, it is to be noted that most people today do not conduct their daily life as though they believe 100% in anything except money!

Regardless, each one of us can contribute to increasing the probability for favorable outcomes. Here is how.

Simply stated, believe 100% in your positive thoughts and affirmations. This requires coming from a position of 100% certainty, which is generally not easy for reasoning adults. Therefore, while the conscious mind may be chanting positive affirmations, the mighty subconscious mind keeps on quietly saying – I know, this can’t be. With a dichotomy like this, the conscious positive affirmations are usually rendered ineffective, as seen in the actual behavior being different from the conscious desires.

It is best to recognize the tussle between the conscious and subconscious mind early on. When the differences cannot be resolved, it is wiser to put the subconscious to work, so that it has no time to work against you. This can be accomplished simply by regularly asking exploratory positive questions such as: how can I produce specific (carefully stated) results and enjoy the process? This type of self questioning can be highly effective for stress management by avoiding confrontations with the mighty subconscious and put its powerful resources work to for what you really value and need.

Yoga & Meditation also help in several ways.
